Allah ﷻ states in Surah Al-Baqarah:
فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ فَزَادَهُمُ اللَّهُ مَرَضًا
“In their hearts there is a disease, then Allah increases for them their disease.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:10)

A greedy heart never feels satisfied.

Allah says:
لَا تَقْنَطُوا مِن رَّحْمَةِ اللَّهِ
“Do not despair of Allah’s mercy.”
(Surah Az-Zumar 39:53)
Sunni Tasawwuf teaches that the heart gathers spiritual rust every day.
Dhikr and tawbah polish it.
Imam Al-Ghazali (رحمه الله) wrote extensively about curing the Diseases of the Heart in Islam through:
Khwaja Gharib Nawaz (رحمه الله) emphasized:

أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ

A wealthy man went to meet Shaykh Abdul Qadir al-Jilani (rahimahullah) asking him why he felt inside of himself so empty even though he was successful in life.
Shaykh Abdul Qadir al-Jilani (rahimahullah) answered him, “Your body is living in luxury, but your heart is living in starvation.”
Upon receiving this answer, the man cried.
Afterwards, he began to devote himself towards the remembrance of Allah (dhikr), giving charitably, and his humility allowed him to soften his heart once again.

اللَّهُمَّ طَهِّرْ قَلْبِي مِنَ النِّفَاقِ وَالرِّيَاءِ
O Allah, purify my heart from hypocrisy and showing off.
اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ قَلْبِي خَاشِعًا
O Allah, make my heart humble.
اللَّهُمَّ اهْدِنِي وَزَكِّ نَفْسِي
